HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It is a non-invasive technology that delivers precise ultrasound energy deep into the skin’s structural layers, generating controlled heat at specific focal points. This heat triggers the body’s natural wound-healing response, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin without affecting the surrounding tissue or skin surface.

Liftera uses a unique micro-focused ultrasound technology with a patented cartridge system that delivers energy more precisely and comfortably than older generation HIFU devices. It offers superior targeting of the SMAS layer at 4.5mm depth, finer energy distribution, and a more consistent treatment pattern — resulting in more uniform lifting with significantly reduced discomfort compared to first-generation machines.

Both are HIFU-based treatments, but they are different devices. Liftera is a newer generation machine with a more refined delivery mechanism, a larger treatment footprint per shot, and generally a more comfortable patient experience. Liftera delivers energy at three key depths: 1.5mm (targeting the dermis), 3.0mm (targeting the deep dermis and subcutaneous tissue), and 4.5mm (targeting the SMAS layer — the same foundational muscle membrane addressed in surgical facelifts). When the focused ultrasound creates micro-thermal zones at precise depths, the surrounding tissue cells — called fibroblasts — respond by producing new collagen fibers. Over the following weeks and months, this fresh collagen contracts and organises, physically lifting and tightening the treated tissue.
